The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III - 6 May 2023

On 6 May 2023, I had the extraordinary honour of being personally selected by His Majesty King Charles III as an official artist to record his Coronation Procession. It was an immense privilege to be entrusted with capturing such a significant moment in British history, continuing a distinguished tradition of artists commissioned to document royal occasions.

Positioned in Trafalgar Square, I witnessed the magnificent spectacle of the procession, from the splendour of the ceremonial carriages and military pageantry to the extraordinary atmosphere created by the thousands who had gathered to celebrate. Seventy years earlier, the artist Richard Eurich had painted the Coronation Procession of Queen Elizabeth II from this same historic setting, making the occasion all the more meaningful.

While photography and film preserve the events of the day, I believe drawing and painting offer a unique and personal interpretation of history, capturing the atmosphere, movement and emotion of a moment through the artist's eye.

Over the following months, I developed my drawings and observations into a series of finished paintings, which have since become part of the Royal Collection. In September 2024, the works were presented to His Majesty at Clarence House.

To have been selected for such a prestigious commission, and to know that my paintings will form part of the artistic record of this historic Coronation for generations to come, remains one of the greatest honours of my career.
